The members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) detained five Bangladeshi nationals and recovered foreign currencies worth of Tk 86.42 lakh from their possessions at capital’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early today.

The detained people are identified as Maksudur Rahman, 34; Razon Shikdar, 40; Suman Shikdar, 40, SM Rafiqul Islam, 35 and Badal Khan, 44.

All of them were the passengers of a Malaysia-bound flight MH-197, said Alamgir Hossain Shimul, senior assistant superintendent of police (APBn).

The law enforcers detained the five following their suspicious movement at the boarding bridge area of the airport around 1:00am, he added.

After searching their bodies, the law enforcers recovered the foreign currencies of different countries including US dollars, Malaysian Ringgits, Saudi and Qatari Riyals and United Arab Emirates Dirham worth of Tk 86,42,053, the police official said.

"We are suspecting that the detainees are active members of the international gold smuggling gang and were trying to go to Malaysia to make their mission successful," the ASP added.
